Cat Carrier: Is It Really Useful for Transporting Cats?

A cat is, by nature, a rather stressed animal. As long as it isn’t used to wandering outside regularly, it prefers its home and doesn’t appreciate being disturbed by its landmarks. So, when the time comes to make it understand that you’re going to take it out, it’s always tricky. It’s best to offer your feline a means of transport in which it feels comfortable. The carrier bag could reconcile it with its trips to the vet!

The benefits of a cat carrier

The advantages of carrier bags are numerous. The multitude of models available on the market can meet any owner’s needs. Are you looking for a model that’s small or large, but above all, lightweight? It’s possible. Are you looking for a bag that’s adapted to your cat’s size and allows for a comfortable carry? It does exist. You can also discover models that offer very practical storage pockets!

Transport is also completely safe. The bag generally has a main closure system, but can also be closed from the top or side. Some models have mesh fabric to ensure ventilation and allow the cat to see what’s going on outside. For the more fearful, some models confine them, like a cocoon.

The carrying bag has a place of choice thanks to its modernity.

Carrying bag vs. carrying crate? The duel begins!

Which will win the vote: a carrier bag or a carrier? Some people still opt for the famous carrier, which easily survives the years without damage. Others choose to invest in a carrier bag, with more modern curves and for its practicality. It’s time to discover their pros and cons to decide between them.

  • The carrier bag: this definitely wins the prize for lightness. Thanks to its soft and lightweight materials (such as polyester), it helps relieve the burden on the owner when carrying their pet. That’s less weight! This makes it easy to handle. The bag also offers comfort for the cat; it’s often padded or soft, which helps soothe the feline.

Additionally, carrier bags come in a variety of styles. They can be carried by hand, but also as a backpack (well-positioned, at the height of its owner, which the cat will greatly appreciate). There’s also the “roller bag” model, perfect for larger cats. In the same vein, there’s the “stroller” model, with four wheels, to provide the least possible effort.

Unlike a crate, a carrier bag offers less protection for your pet in the event of a shock or jolt, as it is less rigid. It is also less easy to clean and maintain.

  • The carrier: its heavier weight and bulky nature are offset by shock absorption, especially when the cat is in a vehicle. It remains a classic, thanks to its stable seat, but clearly loses its advantage in terms of practicality. The models are basic, without storage, and offer few alternatives.

Its daily maintenance is simpler than that of the bag. The crate is permitted on all public transport.

The cat carrier and public transport

A cat carrier is recommended for short trips or everyday outings. As a reminder, it is strongly recommended not to walk your cat unprotected. Cats can exhibit unexpected behavior when faced with danger. Therefore, it must be kept inside to avoid any problems.

If the cat owner travels by car, train, or even on foot, they can choose a carrier model that suits their lifestyle. By taking into account all the criteria discussed above, it’s relatively easy to find a model that matches the lifestyle of the cat/owner duo.

Beware of unpleasant surprises, however! By IATA standards for air transport safety, carrier bags are not accepted for air travel, especially when the animal must travel in the hold (exceeding the authorized weight limit). In this case, airlines favor transport cages. While it is possible to keep your pet in the cabin, it is best to check beforehand whether the airline accepts a particular type of bag.
